    Habit
    Stiffly erect perennial herb with 1(–2) stems from creeping or suberect woody rootstock; stems 0.7–1.3 m tall, wiry, glabrous to densely pubescent when young, glabrescent.
    Leaves
    Leaves: large pair 1.5–3 times longer than small pair; lamina linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, large pair 11–21 × 0.8–2.5 cm, with entire margin or with a single tooth near base, beneath glabrous or with a few curly hairs on midrib, above glabrous to uniformly sparsely crisped-puberulous, scabrid on margins and above.
    Flowers
    Heads on upper part of stem (rarely also lower down), dense and globose; peduncle 0.5–4 cm long, sparsely to densely sericeous-puberulous; axes densely sericeous-puberulous; floral leaves and outer bracts sericeous-puberulous (pubescent on margins), narrowly ovate-elliptic, 2–4 cm long, with distinct submarginal and transverse ladder-like veins, with up to 6 teeth per side; inner bracts similar, up to 1.5 cm long.
    Calyx
    Sepals uniformly puberulous (hairs slightly longer on veins), without or towards base with a few stalked capitate glands; dorsal ovate-elliptic, 27–28 mm long (terminal mucro ± 3 mm), tapering gradually or with a long slightly ligulate apical part, apex acute, on each side with 1–2 lateral teeth; ventral ovate-elliptic, 26–27 mm long, tapering gradually to apex, bifurcate with two ± 5 mm long teeth, on each side with one lateral tooth; lateral ± 24 mm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla pale mauve to purple with white tube, 30–35 mm long of which the tube 7–10 mm; limb obovate, 15–20 mm wide, distinctly 3-lobed, callus with three equally strong ribs; filaments 7–8 mm long, sparsely glandular towards base, appendage ± 3 mm long, triangular in outline, flattened towards the anther; anthers 5–7 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule ± 13 mm long.
    Seeds
    Seed ± 7 × 4.5 mm.
    Ecology
    Brachystegia woodland on grey loamy soil, large rocky outcrops with Brachystegia microphylla thicket on gravelly-stony soil; 1450–1600 m
