    Dwarf to large epiphytic, lithophytic or rarely terrestrial herbs

    Stems short to elongate, unbranched or branching, erect to pendent, covered by leaf-bases

    Leaves thin-textured, fleshy or coriaceous, flattened or rarely iridiform, unequally bilobed at the apex, often twisted at the base and articulated to persistent leaf-bases

    Inflorescences axillary, 1–many-flowered, racemose or rarely paniculate
    Flowers
    Flowers fleshy, small to large, often stellate; ovary often twisted through 180°, sessile or pedicellate
    Perianth
    Sepals and petals free, subsimilar

    Lip concave, entire to 3-lobed, enveloping the column at the base, spurred at the base

    Column fleshy, very short, lacking a foot; clinandrium rather shallow, cleft in front with a short tooth-like rostellum in the sinus; pollinia 2, globose, sulcate, attached to a common viscidium or each attached to a separate viscidium.

    Very small to very large epiphytic or lithophytic herbs, rarely terrestrial.

    Inflorescences (floral axes) axillary, 1- to many-flowered, usually racemose but rarely branched.

    Ovary sessile or pedicellate, often twisted through 180°.Sepals and petals free, subsimilar, usually spreading.
    Labellum
    Lip entire, rarely obscurely 3-lobed, concave, spurred, the base enveloping the column.
    Column
    Column short, fleshy, without a foot; clinandrium shallow, 2-lobed in front with a short tooth-like rostellum between the lobes; pollinia 2, globose, sulcate, attached to a common viscidium or with separate viscidia.
