1. Family: Malvaceae Juss.
    1. Pavonia Cav.

      1. This genus is accepted, and is native to Asia-Tropical, Africa, Society Island, Southern America, Northern America and Asia-Temperate..

    Malvaceae, A. W. Exell. Flora Zambesiaca 1:2. 1961

Annual, biennial or perennial herbs or shrubs, usually erect.
Leaves usually petiolate, varying in shape, undivided to palmatipartite, often cordate at the base.
Flowers yellow to white, pink, mauve or reddish, pedicellate or subsessile, solitary or occasionally in terminal subcapitate racemes or spikes.
Epicalyx of 5–16 ovate to linear or filiform bracts, free or ± connate, shorter or longer than the calyx.
Calyx saucer-shaped to campanulate; lobes usually ovate.
Petals longer than the calyx, sometimes clawed.
Staminal tube dilated at the base, truncate and 5-toothed at the apex, bearing the free terete filaments on the upper portion (rarely nearly down to the base).
Carpels 5, 1-ovulate; style-branches terete, usually 10 or occasionally fewer but always more than 5; stigmas capitate, often penicillate.
Fruit of 5 indehiscent 1-seeded carpels separating from the torus, sometimes ribbed or winged, muticous or awned; pericarp thin or woody.
Seeds reniform; cotyledons folded; endosperm absent.

Malvaceae, Bernard Verdcourt & Geoffrey Mwachala. Pavonia, B Verdcourt; Kosteletzkya, OJ Blanchard Jr.; Gossypium, P Fryxell & B Verdcourt. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 2009

Annual or perennial herbs, subshrubs or shrubs, erect or less often procumbent or scrambling.
Indumentum usually stellate but simple and glandular hairs often present
Leaves unlobed to palmately shallowly to very deeply lobed, often toothed; stipules linear to lanceolate
Flowers solitary in leaf axils or in clusters or heads sometimes ± forming paniculiform, raceme-like or spicate inflorescences; epicalyx bracts 5–16(–19), ovate to linear, free or slightly joined at base; calyx 5-lobed; corolla white, yellow, pink, red or mauve, often with darker centre, longer than calyx
Staminal tube truncate, bearing numerous free filaments mostly in upper part but often some basal ones with much longer filaments
Carpels 5, free, 1-ovulate, styles usually 10, sometimes fewer; stigmas capitate
Fruit a discoid to subglobose schizocarp; mericarps segmentshaped or ± rhomboid or obovoid, glabrous or pubescent, variously reticulate, ribbed or with crests, conical projections or spines or distinctly awned, indehiscent or some thin-walled ones ultimately splitting
    Seeds reniform.
Two groups are taxonomically difficult and very different species concepts have been followed by several botanists. I have for the most part followed Vollesen who has extensive field knowledge; Fryxell who began the account for East Africa but was unable to finish it has more conservative concepts explained by notes in the appropriate places. I have followed Ulbrich’s order of species as far as possible. He recognised too many species and infraspecific taxa but his basic arrangement is sound. For an exhaustive account of the genus see Fryxell, Flora Neotropica Monograph 76 (1999) where all aspects of its biology are discussed.
