    Habit
    Erect annual or biennial with several branches from the base, these up to 60 cm. tall, everywhere covered with fine, appressed pubescence.
    Leaves
    Leaves 1–6 cm. long, sinuate-dentate, lanceolate or narrowly ovate, sessile.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence erect, the buds also erect; flowers borne in the axils of much reduced leaves.
    Flowers
    Floral tube 8–15 mm. long. Flowers opening near sunset.
    Calyx
    Sepals 5–6 mm. long, with slender free tips c. 1 mm. long.
    Corolla
    Petals 3–6 mm. long, bright yellow, fading reddish.
    Stamens
    Anthers c. 2 mm. long, the filaments 4–6 mm. long.
    Style
    Style surrounded by the anthers at anthesis; stigma with linear lobes 2–3 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 15–22 mm. long, cylindric, not winged, subsessile.
    Seeds
    Seeds c. 1 mm. long, light brown, obovoid, indistinctly and shallowly pitted.
    Cytology
    Chromosome number n=7 (ring of 14 at meiotic metaphase I).
