Habit
Climber; stems quadrangular, very sparingly pubescent or glabrescent; tendrils present.
Leaves
Leaves simple; petiole 1–6·5 cm., leaf-lamina up to 10·4 × 6·2 cm., ovate-oblong, cuspidate at the apex, margin remotely serrate, slightly cordate, truncate or rounded at the base, glabrous except sometimes pubescent at the base underneath and along principal nerves; stipules 2 mm. long, triangular, auriculate.
Inflorescences
Cymes 4–10 cm. long, leaf-opposed; peduncle ± 1 cm. long lengthening to 2 cm. in fruit, glabrescent; pedicels ± 5 mm. long lengthening to 10 mm. or more in fruit, appressed-pubescent or glabrescent; bracts and bracteoles 0·5 mm. long, glabrous, ciliate.
Buds
Flower-bud ± 4 mm. × 2 mm., conical, acute or acuminate at the apex, glabrous.
Calyx
Calyx 1 mm. long, subentire, glabrous.
Pistil
Ovary glabrous; style 1·5 mm. long; stigma subcapitate.
Fruits
Fruit black or purplish-red, 1·1–1·8 × 0·8–1 cm.
Seeds
Seed 1, up to 13 × 8 mm., smooth, with dorsal crest.

Habit
Herbaceous climber or extensive liane 2.4–15 m. long; young stems cylindrical, ± fleshy, pubescent when young but soon glabrous; older stems 4-angled; tendrils usually simple, glabrous.
Leaves
Leaves simple, oblong-triangular, oblong-ovate or broadly lanceolate, 6–12(–14) cm. long, 4.5–6(–9) cm. wide, acuminate at the apex, truncate to subcordate at the base, entire, regularly finely remotely dentate at the margin with narrow teeth, glabrous except sometimes for few hairs on venation beneath; petiole 1–8 cm. long, deeply grooved, ± glabrous; stipules ovate-triangular, 2–3.5 mm. long and wide, auriculate at the base, glabrous.
Flowers
Flowers in umbel-like clusters arranged in axillary and terminal cymose inflorescences 3–5(–10) cm. long; peduncle 1–2(–5) cm. long, glabrous or sparsely pubescent; pedicels 4–6 mm. long, very densely hairy, lengthening to 1 cm. in fruit and ± glabrous to ferruginous pubescent; bracts shortly triangular, 0.5–1.5 mm. long, indurated at the base, glabrous or glabrescent, ciliate.

Calyx cupuliform, 1 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, glabrous.
Buds
Buds ± contracted at apex when dry.
Corolla
Petals pink or yellowish, elongate-triangular, ± 3 mm. long, glabrous.

Ovary glabrous.
Fruits
Fruits purplish red to black, ovoid, oblong-ovoid or ellipsoid, 0.9–1.8 cm. long, 0.6–1 cm. wide, glabrous, 1-seeded.
Seeds
Seed compressed subglobose or oblong-subglobose, 0.9–1.3 cm. long, 6–8 mm. wide, 4–6 mm. thick, with short basal projection; median keel ± raised; pits large and open; surface smooth or slightly rugulose.
Habitat
Evergreen forest, Streamside forest in valleys, rocky places near waterfalls, etc.; 750–1050 m.
