    Stems erect or decumbent, pubescent or hispidulous, densely covered with simple hairs to ± 3 mm long, sometimes also with stellate, bifurcate or glandular hairs

    Leaves lanceolate to ovate or rarely almost hastate, often larger and smaller leaves present at a node, the larger 3.5–7.2 cm long, 1.3–4.8 mm wide, the smaller 1.6–3 cm long, 0.8–2 cm wide, apex acute, margin irregularly serrate-crenate, base subcordate or truncate, membranaceous, appressed-hispidulous above and below; 5(–7)-nerved below; petiole 0.4–1.2(–2) cm long, ± pulvinate apically, pubescent with some glandtipped hairs or hispidulous; stipules subulate-lanceolate, 8–12 mm long, 1–3 mm wide, hirsute, margins ciliate, often persisting

    Inflorescences dense axillary cymes; peduncle to ± 5 mm long; bracts numerous, 6.5–9 mm long, ± 0.8 mm wide, outer bracts stipule-like, inner ones linear to filiform, the 3 bracts subtending the calyx forming an involucre, margins ciliolate

    Petals obovate to narrowly obovate, shortly clawed, 9–10.5 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, white (or cream) with a yellow throat, glabrous.

    Seed ± trigonal with a rounded dorsal and two flat surfaces, 1.5–1.8 mm long, ± 1 mm wide, grey, testa minutely punctate.

    Habit
    Annual herb up to c. 1·6 m. tall; branches pubescent or hispidulous.
    Leaves
    Leaf-lamina up to 65 × 4·8 cm., ovate, apex acute, margin serrate-crenate, base sub-cordate or truncate and 5-nerved, appressed-hispidulous on both surfaces, sometimes densely so, or glabrescent; petiole up to 1·5 cm. long, pubescent or hispidulous; stipules up to 1·3 cm. long, narrowly lanceolate-acuminate, margins ciliolate.

    Flowers in subsessile axillary cymes; pedicels up to c. 5 mm. long, hispidulous; bracts c. 1 cm. long, subulate, hispidulous.
    Calyx
    Calyx c. 5 mm. long, campanulate, ciliolate, with short abruptly acuminate lobes.
    Corolla
    Petals white, c. 8 mm long, obovate.
    Stamens
    Stamens adherent to the petals below; filaments c. 5 mm. long, united in a tube almost to the apex or to about 1/2 way up; anther-thecae as in M. corchorifolia.
    Pistil
    Ovary oblong-ovoid, silky-hairy; styles c. 5 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 3·5 mm. in diam., depressed-globose, 5-valved, hispidulous or glabrescent, surrounded by the persistent calyx and bracts.
    Seeds
    Seeds c. 2·5 × 1·3 mm., 1 per loculus, subellipsoid, 3-sided; testa very minutely rugulose.
