    Habit
    Shrub or small tree 2–3.6 m. tall; innovations sometimes ± pale ferruginous pubescent but stems otherwise glabrous, blackish and wrinkled, ± slender.
    Leaves
    Leaves clustered on very short abbreviated side shoots, 3–5 per shoot, the internodes suppressed. Leaves oblanceolate, obcuneate or narrowly elliptic, 1.2–6 cm. long, 0.6–2.2 cm. wide, acute to rounded at the apex, narrowed to the base, drying ± pale green, sessile, coarsely serrate towards the apex, glabrous but minutely gland-dotted.
    Inflorescences
    Peduncles very slender, apparently from the apices of short shoots but actually lateral, 2.5–4.5 cm. long, straw-coloured or purple, 1–2-flowered, secondary axes 1.5 cm. long, true pedicels 7 mm. long; inflorescences very lax; bracts narrowly elliptic, 1.5–2.5(–5) mm. long, 1–2 mm. wide.
    Calyx
    Calyx glabrous; tube 2–3 mm. long; lobes 1–2 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, rounded, glabrous.
    Corolla
    Corolla pale greenish outside, whitish inside with lower lip pale bluish purple, glabrous outside; tube ± 10 mm. long, lobes up to 1.5 cm. long, 5 mm. wide; stamens exserted 2 cm.
    Fruits
    Fruit black, 7 mm. long, 1–1.5 cm. wide, lobed.
    Habitat
    Brachystegia woodland and Markhamia, Piliostigma, Strychnos; 1200–1500 m.
