    Habit
    Perennial subshrubby herb 30–40(–100) cm. tall from thick woody rootstock; shoots few, unbranched, ± densely shortly ± bifariously spreading pubescent.
    Leaves
    Leaves in whorls of 3, drying ± pale green or brownish, oblanceolate to elliptic-oblong, 4–13(–18) cm. long, 1.2–5(–8) cm. wide, acute at the apex, long attenuate at base, distantly serrate save on narrowed part, shortly pubescent and with longer hairs on the midrib beneath, essentially subsessile or petiole 1–2 mm. long.
    Inflorescences
    Cymes arranged in a narrow terminal inflorescence 7–12(–23) cm. long and a few from 1–2 lower leafy nodes; inflorescence-axes sometimes purple, the peduncle up to 4 cm. long and true pedicels 2–3 mm. long; leafy bracts sometimes purplish; bracteoles linear to lanceolate, 2–5 mm. long.
    Calyx
    Calyx pale green to red in life, vinaceous on drying, obconic, white-pubescent; tube 3 mm. long; lobes rounded, 2 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide.
    Corolla
    Corolla white with lower lip blue; tube 6 mm. long; lobes 9 mm. long, 3–4 mm. wide.
    Style
    Style exserted 2 cm.
    Fruits
    Fruit deeply 4-lobed.
    Habitat
    Terminalia-Combretum open woodland and Brachystegia woodland; 1320–1400 m.
