    Type
    Type: Tanzania, Kyimbila, falls by Mwakele, Stolz 685 (B, holo.; K, iso., not found).
    Habit
    Herb 15–50 cm high; stem erect or curved from the base, glabrous.
    Stipules
    Stipules persistent, membranous, ovate, 2.5–4 mm long, slightly fimbriate at the margin, acute.
    Leaves
    Leaves membranous, ovate, 4.5–7 × 2–3.5 cm, base obliquely cordate, apex acuminate, margin serrate, pilose above, almost glabrous beneath; venation ± palmate; axillary bulbils may be present; petiole to 5.5 cm long, with ring of hairs at the junction with the lamina. Flowers in axillary bisexual cymes, 2–4-flowered; peduncle 1.5–2.8 cm; bracts ovate, 3–5 mm long, persistent; pedicels 10–30 mm long.
    Flowers
    Female flowers: tepals 5, (colour not known), oblong, 6–8 × 2.8–5 mm; ovary ovoid, 7.5 × 4 mm, 3-locular, 3-winged; placentation axile, placentas undivided; styles three, caducous, branched halfway, the arms twisted, with a continuous, spiral stigmatic band. Male flowers: tepals 4, pink, the outer orbicular or ovate, 9 × 6–9 mm, the inner 7–9 × 4–6.5 mm; filaments 1–1.5 mm, anthers ellipsoid, 1.2–1.5 mm long.
    Fruits
    Fruit an ovoid to subglobose capsule, 4–9 × 3.5–4 mm, the wings subequal and to 11 mm wide; dehiscence along the junction with the wing.
    Ecology
    Streamside; ± 1000 m.
    Conservation
    Data Deficient (DD).
    Note
    Irmscher states that this is very close to ( B. bequaertii and) B. sutherlandii, but the characters he mentions seem to be restricted to differences in leaf margin dissection. In due course, B. stolzii may be better regarded as part of the range of variation of B. sutherlandii.
