    Habit
    Shrub, scrambler or small tree to 6 m. or more high, the branches generally densely lenticellate.

    Leaves petiolate, mostly 3-foliolate, some 1- to 2-foliolate; petiole 1.5–6.5 cm. long; leaflets 6–15 cm. long, 2.5–10 cm. wide, the terminal or median leaflet the largest, usually at least a little unequal sided; petiolule 2–7(–9) mm. long.

    Inflorescence on short leafless lateral branches, 1.5–2.5 cm. long, or terminal on long leafy branches; pedicels 1.5–8 cm. long.

    Sepals 4, lanceolate or elliptic, 2–3 cm. long, 0.8–1.5 cm. wide, ciliate.
    Corolla
    Petals 4–8 or more, linear-oblong, 3–6 cm. long, clawed, acuminate.
    Stamens
    Stamens many, 2–3.5 cm. long; filaments white; anthers blue or grey.

    Gynophore 2.5–4 cm. long or sometimes undeveloped.

    Habit
    Shrub or small tree 2–4 m. tall with somewhat pendulous, brown, densely lenticelled branches.
    Leaves
    Leaves 3–5-foliolate; terminal leaflet 7–18 x 3–8 cm., lateral leaflets 5–15 x 3–6 cm., oblong-elliptic, oblong or obovate-oblong, rounded or shortly acuminate, often recurved at the apex, rounded or shortly cuneate at the base, glabrous on both sides, nerves raised below and sometimes above; petiole up to 7 cm. long; petiolules 5–7 mm. long, channelled above and articulated at the base.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence of terminal racemes with about 12–30 flowers, moderately dense at first; pedicels up to 4 cm. long, glabrous, with three basal minute, subspinous, subulate bracteoles c. 0.5 mm. long, the middle one very early deciduous.
    Calyx
    Sepals 2–3 x 1–1.6 cm., ovate-acuminate, glabrous except for a minute, crisped pubescence on the margins, with about 7 longitudinal nerves; receptacle c. 1 mm. tall.
    Corolla
    Petals 4, white, up to 4.5 x 0.5 cm., narrowly oblanceolate with a narrower claw almost as long as the lamina, or linear.
    Stamens
    Stamens numerous on a short androgynophore c. 1 mm. long, with slender filaments somewhat shorter than the petals; anthers linear, somewhat sagittate and with the anther-thecae subacute at the base; gynophore c. 4 cm. long, glabrous; ovary c. 0.8 cm. long, glabrous, cylindric; stigma sessile, capitate, about as wide as the ovary.
    Fruits
    Fruit 5–7 x 2.5–3 cm., cylindric, rounded at both ends, on a stout pedicel 2.5–4.5 cm. long and a gynophore 2.5–3 cm. long, 4- or rarely 3- or 6-valved, longitudinally dehiscent with the valves thick and coriaceous, rather shiny, brown-verrucose, somewhat fleshy within, many-seeded.

    Seeds 0.6 x 1.0 cm., rugose with a brown testa, somewhat compressed and 3-sided.
