    Habit
    Dwarf shrub, glabrous except for the sepal margins, with a woody rootstock and suberect or decumbent, pale-brown, densely lenticellate branches up to 0.5 m. long.
    Leaves
    Leaves 3–5-foliolate, deciduous, developing after the flowers; leaflets 4–11 x 3–5 cm., lateral leaflets somewhat smaller, subsessile, oblanceolate, apex attenuate-acuminate, narrowly cuneate at the base, with 4–5 pairs of lateral nerves; petiole up to 12 cm. long.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence of short, subsessile, rather dense racemes, appearing just before the beginning of the rainy season; rhachis 1–4 cm. long, 15–20-flowered; pedicels up to 2.2 cm. long; bracts c. 1 mm. long, trifid, subulate.
    Receptacle
    Receptacle 3–4 mm. long, 2 mm. wide at the mouth.
    Calyx
    Sepals 1.2–2.0 x 0.5–0.7 cm., narrowly ovate, acuminate at the apex, densely puberulous at the margins.
    Corolla
    Petals 0.
    Androgynophore
    Androgynophore barely exceeding the receptacle.
    Stamens
    Stamens 50–60; filaments c. 2 cm. long; anthers 1.3 x 0.8 mm., oblong.
    Pistil
    Ovary on a gynophore up to 2 cm. long, oblong-cylindric; ovules c. 36 on 2 placentas; stigma sessile, capitate.
    Fruits
    Fruit 2.5 x 0.75 cm. (not quite mature), oblong-cylindric, finely verrucose.
