Caryophyllaceae, W. B. Turrill. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 1956

Morphology General Habit
Stems procumbent to weakly ascending, sometimes rooting at some nodes, glabrescent with scattered hairs to glabrous in the lower parts or with hairs retained in the furrows.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves all petiolate; blades ovate, acute and apiculate or shortly acuminate, rounded or slightly cuneate at the base, when well formed 1.5–4.5 cm. long and 1–3 cm. broad, midrib moderately conspicuous, lateral veins rather obscure but all anastomosing very close to the margin, with scattered and often glandular hairs; petioles 0.4–3 cm. long, slightly amplexicaul at the base and there usually more or less connate, glandular-hirsute.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescence terminal to the main branches, densely but shortly glandular-pubescent; pedicels at first very short but elongating to 8 mm.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Sepals ovate-lanceolate, acute or shortly acuminate, 4.5–6 mm. long, glandular on the abaxial surface.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Petals strongly bifid, often about equal in length to or slightly shorter than the sepals or up to half as long again as the sepals, white.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Stamens 10, when all fertile.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Gynoecium Style
Styles 3.

Morphology General Habit
Weak, procumbent or ascending herb, sometimes rooting at the nodes; stems with scattered hairs in the upper internodes, often glabrous in the lower internodes or with hairs retained in the stem furrows.
Morphology Leaves
Leaves all petiolate; lamina up to 4·5 × 3 cm., ovate, apex acute and apiculate or shortly acuminate, rounded or slightly cuneate at the base, with scattered and often glandular hairs on both sides, midrib conspicuous, lateral nerves obscure but anastomosing close to the margins and producing a submarginal nerve, petiole up to c. 2 (3) cm. long, slightly amplexicaul and connate at the base, glandular-hirsute.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences
Inflorescences lax, terminal, densely glandular-pubescent; bracts c. 3·5 × 1 mm., lanceolate, glandular-pubescent; pedicels short at first but elongating to c. 8 mm. long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Sepals 5, 4·5–6 × 1·5–2 mm., lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, acute or shortly acuminate, glandular outside.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Petals 5, white, somewhat rhombic, bifid c. 1/3 of the way down, from slightly shorter to 1 1/2 times the length of the sepals.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens
Stamens usually 10 but sometimes fewer by reduction, filaments c. 3 mm. long, swollen at the base.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Gynoecium Pistil
Ovary ovoid, c. 3-ovulate; styles 3, c. 1·5 mm. long, slender.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Capsule globose, slightly shorter than the persistent sepals, opening at the apex by 6 valves.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Seeds
Seeds (often only one developing to maturity) brown, c. 3 mm. in diam., discoid; testa lightly striate.
