    Habit
    Plants pubescent throughout, with some hairs characteristically hooked Weak, often sappy, caulescent herbs
    Leaves
    Lowest leaf usually solitary, petiolate, flowering stems usually developing one pair of opposite, petiolate or subsessile leaves
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences appearing terminal but actually axillary to a bract-like cordiform leaf at the summit of the flowering stem, one to several such stems developing above the upper leaf pair; cymes dense, capitate, scorpioid, flowers paired
    Calyx
    Calyx tubular towards the base, divided into five lobes approximately midway along its length
    Corolla
    Corolla gamopetalous; tube longer than lobes; limb bilabiate, the upper lip suberect, two-lobed, the lower lip three-lobed
    Stamens
    Stamens arising from near the corolla mouth, fused at the base, the posterior two only fertile, free section of filaments twisted, anthers cohering face to face; two anterior staminodes welldeveloped
    Disc
    Disk cylindric, enveloping the ovary, occasionally much reduced
    Ovary
    Ovary unilocular, subglobose.
    Style
    Style slender, held in position in the upper section of the corolla tube by the stamens.
    Stigma
    Stigma extended beyond the stamens, papillose
    Fruits
    Capsule thin-walled, subglobose, surrounded by the persistent, somewhat accrescent calyx, circumscissile
    Seeds
    Seeds numerous, fusiform, ± striate.
    Note
    An Old World genus of over 20 species (only one occurring in Africa), currently under revision by O.M. Hilliard & B.L. Burtt.
