    Habit
    Terrestrial or in rock crevices.
    Rhizomes
    Rhizome shortly creeping, to 4 mm thick, with dark brown clathrate narrowly triangular attenuate rhizome scales to 2 mm long.
    Leaves
    Fronds tufted.
    Stipes
    Stipe shiny black or dark red-brown, 2–23 cm long, glabrous but for some scales near the very base, swollen at base.
    Leaf lamina
    Lamina deltoid to narrowly ovate in outline, 4–26 × 2–14 cm, 3-pinnatisect, basal pinnae largest, apical pinna narrow and much lobed.
    Pinnae
    Pinnae 7–15 pairs, broadly to narrowly ovate, to 8(–12) × 4.5(–5.5) cm, lobes very dissected near base of pinna, margins serrate to dentate, glabrous above, (sub)glabrous beneath.
    Rachis
    Rachis black near base, straw-coloured higher up, glabrous.
    Sori
    Sori 2–5 per lobe, tightly clustered along costa and costules and at a slight angle, ovate, 1–2.5 mm long.
    Indusium
    Indusium translucent, 0.5–0.7 mm wide, entire.

    Widespread; least concern (LC); uncommon in our area
    Note
    In very small plants (those from high altitudes) the sori may obscure the pinna surface.
