Aspleniaceae, A. H. G. Alston. Flora of West Tropical Africa. Ferns and Fern-Allies Supplement. 1959

    Ecology
On trees in forest; up to 600 ft. alt.

    Type
Type: Benin [Oware kingdom], Palisot de Beauvois s.n. (P, holo., not found)
    Habit
    Epiphyte or lithophyte.
    Rhizomes
Rhizome erect or shortly creeping (fide Faden), short, fleshy, with lanceolate clathrate (dark brown cell walls, translucent lumen) rhizome scales to 11 × 1.5 mm, margin entire to sinuate or crenate (not crenate in our specimens), apex attenuate and ending in a hair-tip.
    Leaves
    Fronds tufted, drooping.
    Stipes
Stipe thick, canaliculate, gradually attenuate from lamina but sometimes seemingly to 25 cm long, with a few scales at the very base.
    Leaf lamina
Lamina slightly fleshy, lanceolate or strap-shaped, 25–100 × (2.2–)3–8 cm, entire, base attenuate, apex attenuate, glabrous.
    Leaf veins
Costa clear, flattened. Veins many, free, forking, 6–7 per cm, at angle of 45–70° with costa.
    Sori
Sori many along the veins, linear, long ones alternating with occasional short ones, 9–30 mm long, reaching neither costa nor margin.
    Indusium
Indusium membranous, entire, pale, to 0.7 mm wide.
    Figures
    Fig. 1: 6, p. 9.
    Ecology
Moist forest, often near water, (low) epiphyte or occasionally on rocks; 1000–1550 m
    Conservation
    Widespread; least concern (LC)
    Note
Chandler 2445a from U 4, Sezibwa Falls, has a very small fronds but has sporulating sori; the lamina on fertile fronds can be as small as 12 × 0.8 cm. Rhizome scales and general look indicate that this is an extreme form. Dummer 2728 from Uganda has some leaves with narrowly triangular outgrowths to 25 mm long on the margin; again, a form rather than a new taxon. Johns split off Faden 70/39 as species A of his checklist, without indicating any differences. I believe it is the same taxon.
