    Trees or rarely shrubs, almost always evergreen, monoecious or rarely dioecious
    Leaves
    Leaves simple, rarely 3–5-lobed, sometimes peltate in the juvenile state with pinnate or palmate nervation

    Inflorescences usually aggregated at the apices of branches, with well-developed or rarely short peduncles; bracts present; partial inflorescences (1–)3-flowered with 1–2 lower pedicellate ♂ flowers and an upper subsessile ♀ or hermaphrodite flower, usually tomentellous, rarely glabrous; bracteoles of ♂ flowers ± equal, approximate, including the partial inflorescences in bud; bracteoles of ♀ flower connate into a cupule which envelops the ovary and later the fruit; rarely free

    Outer perianth-segments with imbricate or quincuncial aestivation; internal ones imbricate to valvate
