- Habit
- Woody herb, tufted, with often numerous ascending flowering stems 5–37 cm high, stems purple-tinged, thinly arachnoid and glabrescent.
- Leaves
- Lower leaves subsucculent, light green with purple-tinged veins, sessile, linear-lanceolate to oblanceolate or elliptic in outline, 2–7.5 cm long, 0.15–0.7 cm wide (–1.5 cm across the lobes), attenuate into a not or hardly expanded membraneous base, margins entire or denticulate to conspicuously pinnately serrate or lobulate or with a few remote pinnate teeth or narrow ascending lobes, apex obtuse to subacute, apiculate, sparsely arachnoid to glabrous except at very base; upper leaves sessile, smaller, ± serrate, subauriculate at the base.

- Capitula radiate, erect, 1–5 in a terminal corymb on each flowering stem; stalks of the individual capitula arachnoid, at least at apex, ± slender; involucre cylindrical-campanulate or shortly so, green, 6–7.5 mm long, 3.5–5 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 8–16, lanceolate to broadly so, imbricate or spreading, green or purplish with dark tips or dark-coloured in upper half, 1–3.5 mm long, slightly arachnoid or ciliate at least at base; phyllaries 15–20, green or purplish, dark in upper part or at the apex, 5–7 mm long, glabrous or almost so.

- Ray florets 10–14, yellow, tube 3.2–3.5 mm long, hairy, rays 6.5–9 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, 4-veined; disc florets yellow, corolla 4–5 mm long, expanded above the middle, glabrous or with 1 or 2 hairs at the base only, lobes 0.5 mm long.

- Achenes 2–2.5 mm long, ribbed, shortly hairy in the grooves; pappus 3.5–4.5 mm long.

- Moist sites in afro-alpine grassland, shallow soil over rocks; 3000–4250 m
