    Flowers hermaphrodite, single, opposite and secund in the axils of small, entire leaf-like bracts, forming a condensed or lax, 1-sided raceme-like thyrse; pedicels with 2 small subulate bracteoles

    Calyx short, tubular, 2-lipped; lips broad, equal, entire, pressed together in fruit; posterior lip folded halfway along its length into a small erect scutellum which becomes larger, concave and sail-like in fruit, later deciduous to release mature nutlets; anterior lip persistent
    Corolla
    Corolla purplish or rarely yellow, posterior lip galeate enclosing the anthers and stigma; anterior lip entire, rounded; lateral lobes more closely joined to posterior lip than anterior; tube narrow, dilated at throat, bent sharply upwards at base or not, glabrous inside
    Stamens
    Stamens attached ± halfway down corolla tube, anterior longer than posterior; filaments glabrous, parallel; anterior anthers dimidiate due to aborted development of upper thecae, posterior thecae convergent; anther slits bordered by cilia
    Ovary
    Ovary glabrous, borne on a short peg-like gynophore, with a swollen, nectar-producing base; style bifid, posterior lobe much shorter than anterior
    Fruits
    Nutlets 4, 1–1.5 mm long, with a small ventral scar; embryo incumbent; endosperm absent.
