    Leaves usually in terminal rosettes on thick much-scarred shoots, stipulate
    Flowers
    Flowers axillary, normally clustered at apices of short-shoots
    Calyx
    Sepals usually 8, arranged in two slightly dissimilar whorls, ± free to base
    Corolla
    Corolla with short tube; lobes 8–10, irregularly denticulate
    Stamens
    Stamens 8–10; filaments about same length as corolla, attenuate and bent near apex; anthers versatile, dehiscence extrorse
    Staminodes
    Staminodes present, petaloid, acute to cuspidate at apex, margins irregularly serrulate
    Pistil
    Ovary subglobose, densely pilose, 8–10-locular; style long and slender; stigma simple
    Fruits
    Fruit an ellipsoid or subglobose berry
    Seeds
    Seeds large, solitary or sometimes 2–3, usually ± ovoid, often flattened on one side in fruits containing more than one seed; testa shiny brown with large pale lateral scar; endosperm absent; cotyledons plano-convex, thick and fleshy, containing abundant fat and oil.
