Dryopteridaceae, JP Roux, M Shaffer-Fehre, B Verdcourt. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 2007

Plants terrestrial or epilithic
Rhizome erect to short-decumbent, simple or sparsely branched, densely scaled
Fronds closely spaced, axes shallowly sulcate, sulci confluent or not.
Leaf lamina
Lamina anadromous, catadromous towards apex, herbaceous to firmly herbaceous, 2–4-pinnate-pinnatifid, basal pinna pair mostly basiscopically developed, adaxially proliferous along rachis or not.
Leaf veins
Venation free, lateral veins in lobes simple, forked, or pinnately branched, vein branches end in teeth near margin, endings often slightly enlarged.
Indumentum composed of unicellular glands, uniseriate pluricellular, isocytic (all cells similar) or moniliform hairs, and scales occurring on rhizome, frond axes and lamina
Sori circular, medial to inframedial on predominantly anadromous (often modified) vein branches; sporangium stalk simple, glandular and/ or haired; sori exindusiate or indusiate, indusium firmly herbaceous, deltoid to reniform, entire to erose, often glandular along margin and on surface
Spores ellipsoidal, monolete, pale to dark brown, perispore folded to form reticulate ridges or echinulate.
A genus of about 150 species with a nearly world-wide distribution.

Dryopteridaceae, JP Roux, M Shaffer-Fehre, B Verdcourt. Flora of Tropical East Africa. 2007

Medium-sized terrestrial ferns, rhizome erect or ascending, covered in dark, entire scales
Fronds in tufts
Stipes densely covered in scales, adaxial groove present, grooves of axes of higher order dwindling at base
Leaf lamina
Lamina deltoid-ovate, acuminate, tripinnatifid; lowest pinna basiscopically produced, anadromous, those above catadromous.
Pinna bases equal, margin entire, rarely serrate.
Leaf veins
Veins dark, free, not reaching margin, apexes terminate in hydathodes
Sori round, indusiate.
A genus of five species from southern China, Taiwan, northern India, South Africa and the Madagascan region.
