- Leaves
- Leaves alternate, long-petiolate, glabrous; blades heart-shaped to kidney-shaped or almost circular, entire or toothed, lobed or angled
- Flowers
- Flowers regular, solitary, nodding, the stalk often coiling spirally in fruit
- Calyx
- Calyx deeply 5-lobed, persistent in fruit
- Corolla
- Corolla pink, purple or white; lobes 5, united near base, twisted in bud but strongly reflexed in flower
- Anthers
- Anthers connivent and forming a cone
- Ovary
- Ovary superior, several-ovulate; style slender; stigma truncate
- Fruits
- Capsule globose, splitting irregularly into 5–7 recurved valves
- Seeds
- Seeds sticky.
