    Note
Commonly known as the Blue potato bush, this species is native to Brazil. Section Acantophora Polhill (1961) recorded that it had been cultivated at Amani and the plants cited in T.T.C.L. were found on the roadside near Amani; this area is notorious for the occurrence of oddities. As this part was going to press, Maria Vorontsova discovered that scans of specimens confirmed the presence of this taxon cultivated at Amani in the past.
    Habit
It is a herb or subshrub growing to 2 m, and armed with dense slender spreading violet prickles up to 2.5 cm long
    Leaves
Leaves broadly ovate, up to 23 cm long and sinuate to deeply pinnatifid with stellate-pubescent lower surfaces
    Flowers
Flowers typically up to 1.9 cm diameter with calyces which are prickly externally; described as yellow in T.T.C.L.; this is unlikely as (apart from the tomato) no yellow-flowered Solanums occur in Africa It is likely that the flowers were in fact purple, drying paler and somewhat yellowish
