    Slender bulbous plants, with linear to strap-shaped leaves with entire apices produced with or after the flowers
    Scape hollow, with 1–few-flowered inflorescences (in East Africa) subtended by 2 free bracts
    Flowers tubular (not in East Africa) to funnel-shaped, regular to slightly irregular, suberect, nodding
    Stamens inserted in the perianth-tube, with filiform filaments and versatile anthers
    Ovary 3-locular, with many superposed ovules in 2 rows in each locule; style distinctly 3-lobed
    Fruit a loculicidal capsule
    Seeds many, black, flattened, with a wing.
