    Leaves opposite, simple, 3-veined from base
    Capitulum
    Capitula axillary or terminal, small, usually in glomerules but sometimes solitary, heterogamous; involucre with few phyllaries, the outer foliaceous, the inner resembling the paleae and enveloping the marginal achenes; receptacular paleae subtending the internal florets
    Florets
    Ray florets 3–8, fertile; disc florets 5–10, hermaphrodite, fertile, with 4 corolla lobes and 4 stamens, the anthers sagittate and with obtuse or truncate apical appendage
    Fruits
    Achenes of marginal florets ellipsoid, compressed, with winged margins; pappus of 2–3 short awns Achenes of inner florets compressed, wings present or absent, tuberculate on one surface; pappus of 2(–4) awns.
