Morphology General Habit
Compact shrub to 1.5 m high branching from the base, sparsely rebranching above

Branches 4–6-angled, deeply winged, regularly constricted into segments 3–4 cm long, 4–7 cm wide; angles sinuately toothed, with teeth to 1.5 cm apart at the base of the segments, closer above
Morphology General Spines
Spine-shields joined to form a continuous horny margin 3–5 mm wide along the angles; spine-pairs robust, to 2.5 cm long, usually less especially towards the constrictions; prickles minute but obvious; flowering eye c. 5 mm above the base of the spines, flanked by a pair of secondary spines to 2.5 mm long
