Morphology General Habit
Succulent perennial herb, with fleshy roots; stems stout, dark bluish green, branching mostly from the base, erect to 90 cm. or decumbent to 1.25 m. long, 3–5 cm. thick, tessellated with very prominent cylindric-conical tubercles bearing the leaves, to 1.5 × 1.5 cm. at the base and to 1 cm. high, in usually 8 tightly spiralled series.

Leaves obovate, to 8 × 5 cm, usually much less, base tapering to a winged petiole to 1.5 cm. long, apex obtuse and apiculate, margin entire, crisped on young leaves, lamina puberulous, sometimes edged and streaked with red; stipules evident as a cluster of usually 5 persistent prickles, each to 2 mm. long, from a horny pad surrounding the base of the leaf-scar.

Cymes on stout peduncles to 6 mm. long, 1–2-forked, arising in the axils of the tubercles and occasionally flanked by a minute prickle; bract-cup slightly exceeding the involucre, ± 7 × 6 mm, shallowly notched between acute apices and sharply prominent midribs, greyish green often flushed with pink.

Cyathia ± 5 × 4.5 mm, with cup-shaped involucres; glandular rim 2.2 mm. high, deep pink; lobes rounded, ± 1 × 1 mm.

Male flowers:bracteoles laciniate, puberulous; stamens 2.8 mm. long. Female flower:perianth evident as a 3-lobed rim below the capsule, ± 3 mm. in diameter; styles 2 mm. long, joined at the base, with thickened rugulose bifid apices.
