Morphology General Habit
Introduced from Madagascar as an ornamental, this species eventually forms a large shrub or tree to ± 6 m. high.

Its leafless succulent pale olive-green branches bear alternating spines 1–3 cm. long formed from modified branchlets.

In flower these terminate in tightly packed clusters of tiny crimson cyathia.
