    Habit
    Shrubs, small trees or lianes, mostly with pubescent stems and foliage
    Leaves
    Leaves shortly petiolate, opposite, usually large; stipules ± oblong, obtuse or subacute, erect, slightly connate at the base
    Flowers
    Flowers in several-many-flowered cymes, which although terminal actually appear unilaterally axillary; peduncles short; pedicels short, ± accrescent in fruit; bracts opposite, clasping at the base
    Calyx
    Calyx-limb tubular with 5 rather short teeth
    Corolla
    Corolla-tube shortly funnel-shaped, velvety outside, the narrow part of the tube closed by a ring of erect hairs; lobes 5, contorted, overlapping to the left, the covered right-hand part glabrous
    Anthers
    Anthers ± sessile, inserted below the middle, included; pollen grains single
    Pistil
    Ovary 2-locular; placentas 2, narrowly peltate, oblong-subcordate; ovules very numerous; style included, the stigma narrowly oblong, grooved
    Fruits
    Fruit subglobose or ellipsoid, with persistent calyx
    Seeds
    Seeds numerous, angular, reticulate.
