    Herbs or undershrubs, pubescent or ± viscid-pubescent or more rarely glabrous, becoming black on drying
    Leaves
    Leaves opposite, at least the lower ones, often alternate above, petiolate or sessile, dentate, dissected or entire

    Flowers solitary in axils of leaves, in terminal racemes or cymes
    Calyx
    Calyx 5-lobed almost to the base, lobes ± imbricate

    Corolla tubular, expanding near the apex, 5-lobed or 2-lipped; lobes imbricate, spreading, entire or shortly 2-fid or emarginate at the apex
