    Habit
    Shrubs or coarse herbs.
    Leaves
    Leaves opposite, subovate, denticulate.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence cymose, axillary or terminal.
    Calyx
    Calyx 5-toothed, lobes linear-lanceolate, slightly overlapping in bud.
    Corolla
    Corolla deciduous; tube cylindrical, equalling to exceeding calyx; limb 5-lobed, spreading, subregular; lobes imbricate in bud, flat when open.
    Stamens
    Stamens 4, perhaps with a rudimentary fifth; filaments short, filiform, inserted near base of corolla tube; anthers short, bithecal, included.
    Pistil
    Ovary bilocular, subglobose; style short, fleshy; stigma ovoid, capitate, cleft at apex; ovules numerous.
    Fruits
    Fruit bilocular, subglobose, indehiscent.
    Seeds
    Seeds numerous, ovoid, rugose.
