    Annual or perennial, caulescent or acaulescent herbs, puberulous to hirsute and often also setose.

    Leaves sessile or shortly petiolate, not or ± divided, usually exstipulate.

    Inflorescences scapose or axillary, of 1-many-flowered racemes; bracteoles single or paired.
    Flowers
    Flowers erect, shortly pedicellate, homostylous or heterostylous.
    Calyx
    Calyx-tube cylindrical, hairy within near the base and usually with 5 tubercles above the insertion of the stamens.
    Corolla
    Petals pale yellow to scarlet or brick-red, rarely white, inserted below the throat of the calyx-tube, spathulate to obovate, cuneate and clawed, with a small ligule opposite to the insertion.
    Stamens
    Stamens with subhypogynous filaments, usually 3 longer and 2 shorter; anthers oblong, dorsifixed.
    Pistil
    Ovary 1-locular, many-ovulate, with parietal placentas; styles 3 with entire or lobed stigmas.
    Fruits
    Capsule usually linear or narrowly ellipsoid, siliquiform, not or ± constricted between the seeds, rostrate, smooth, with irregular loculicidal dehiscence.

    Capsules linear or narrowly ellipsoid, sometimes held horizontally or reflexed; dehiscence loculicidal, irregular (not from apex downwards)
