    [GB]
    Habit
Perennial; caespitose. Butt sheaths papery; glossy. Culms erect; (30-)60-230 cm long. Culm-internodes shorter and closely spaced at top of culm. Lateral branches ample. Leaves distichous. Leaf-sheaths longer than adjacent culm internode. Ligule a ciliate membrane. Leaf-blades aciculate, or linear; parallel-sided; flat, or involute; 1-8 cm long; 2-6 mm wide; stiff. Leaf-blade surface glabrous. Leaf-blade apex pungent.
    Inflorescences
Inflorescence a panicle; embraced at base by subtending leaf. Panicle open; ovate; 1-2 cm long. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.
    Spikelets
Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets orbicular; dorsally compressed; 1.8-2 mm long; falling entire.
    Fertile
Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets orbicular; dorsally compressed; 1.8-2 mm long; falling entire.
    Glume
Glumes dissimilar; reaching apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; 0.5 length of spikelet; membranous; without keels; 0-1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume ovate; 1 length of spikelet; membranous; without keels; 5 -veined. Upper glume apex cuspidate.
    Florets
Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret similar to upper glume; ovate; 1 length of spikelet; membranous; 5 -veined; cuspidate. Fertile lemma oblong; dorsally compressed; 1.5 mm long; indurate; pallid; shiny; without keel. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex obtuse. Palea involute; indurate.

    Habit
Tufted perennial bunch-grass; culms erect, 15–70 cm. high, tough, stout and straight, branching upwards, often densely so.
    Leaves
Leaves widely spaced in the lower part of the culm and conspicuously distichous, becoming densely packed towards the apex; sheaths, especially the lower ones, chartaceous and shiny; lower blades 2.5–8 cm. long, 2–6 mm. wide, straight at the base, flat or inrolled, glabrous, pungent, upper blades subulate, 1–4 cm. long, straight, rarely recurved or deflexed.
    Inflorescences
Panicle ovate, 1–2 cm. long, moderately to sparsely branched, scarcely exserted from the uppermost leaf-sheath.
    Spikelets
Spikelets globose, 1.8–2 mm. long; lower glume broadly ovate, 1/2 the length of the spikelet, 0–1-nerved; upper glume 5-nerved; lower lemma 5-nerved, male, its palea well developed; upper lemma pale, shining.
