    Habit
    Liane 5–15 m. in height with stems more than 8 cm. in diameter; old bark often greyish or whitish, slightly fibrous; young branches smooth, sometimes with 4 small ridges.
    Stipules
    Stipules with fimbriate margins or acute teeth up to 1 mm. long.
    Leaves
    Petiole channelled, (3–)5–10(2–15) mm. long; blade papery to subcoriaceous, elliptic to obovate, 3–10(–17) cm. long, 1.3–4.5(–12.5) cm. wide, shortly acuminate (acumen 2–10 mm. long), cuneate, sometimes abruptly so, at the base; margin entire or with 6–15 teeth each side; secondary nerves, 4–7 pairs, the finest often indistinct when dry.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescences consisting of 1.2–3 mm. long axillary cymes, brownish red or brownish yellow when dry; axis quadrangular; bracts acute, slightly denticulate, at least near the base, to fimbriate; pedicels 2–2.5 mm. long.
    Buds
    Buds 1 mm. long.
    Flowers
    Flowers white, green, cream, yellow or orange, 1.5–3.5 mm. in diameter.
    Calyx
    Sepals unequal, ovate to lanceolate, sometimes slightly denticulate.
    Corolla
    Petals subspathulate, ± 1.7 mm. long, 0.7 mm. wide, obtuse, 1 straight, 4 arcuate.
    Stamens
    Stamens 0.3 mm. long; anthers 2 mm. wide.
    Pistil
    Pistil, including the disc, ± 0.7 mm. in diameter, 0.4 mm. long.
    Infructescences
    Infructescence-axis distinctive, consisting of a succession of short zig-zag internodes, all branches having fallen off.
    Fruits
    Fruits of (1–2)–3 mericarps; mericarps oblong, 2.5–4 cm. long, 1–1.8 cm. wide with a rounded, acute, subtruncate or sometimes bifid apex.
    Seeds
    Seeds 2 in each mericarp, 2–3.5 cm. long, 0.8–1.2 cm. wide, the wing reddish pink, the testa brownish red, sometimes subapiculate.

    Habit
    Liane or scandent shrub, to over 5 m. high (over 30 m. in W. Africa), glabrous; sterns greyish-brown, smooth and slightly 4-lined or terete when young, soon becoming terete, without lenticels.
    Leaves
    Leaf-lamina ± deep green above, paler below, often ± glaucous, 3·5–9·2 × 1·7–3·6 cm. in our area (to 12 × 6·6 cm. in Cameroun), oblong or elliptic-ovate or obovate, acuminate at the apex, with margin entire (in our area) to undulate or glandular-serrulate, cuneate to truncate and decurrent at the base, thin to subcoriaceous, with midrib and 4–6 lateral nerves plane or slightly prominent on both sides, and reticulate venation often visible below; petiole 5–12(14) mm. long; stipules 0·2–0·5 mm. long, broadly triangular to semi-lunar, fimbriate, not united.
    Flowers
    Flowers ?, scented, in lax or ± dense simple axillary dichasia; peduncles and inflorescence branches quadrangular; buds c. 0·6 mm. long, globose; pedicels 0·2–1 (2·5) mm. long; bracts 0·5–0·8 mm. long, triangular, acute, entire or eroded-denticulate, with fimbriate basal auricles, persistent.
    Calyx
    Sepals greenish, c. 0·5 mm. long, unequal, ovate to oblong, obtuse to rounded, with margin irregularly ciliolate or subentire, free or united in the lower 1/3.
    Corolla
    Petals green or white to yellow or orange, 1–1·5 mm. long, obovate to oblong-oblanceolate, rounded, entire, with margins plane, imbricate in bud, spreading or suberect and grouped 2:2:1 over the stamens at anthesis.
    Disc
    Disk single, deeply 3-lobed, each almost separate concave lobe enclosing a stamen.
    Stamens
    Stamens 3, with filaments short, broad; anthers extrorse, circular, 1-thecous.
    Ovary
    Ovary with 3 sessile divergent stigmas, each curved down over a stamen; ovules 2 per loculus.
    Fruits
    Mericarps green tinged purplish-brown, c. 3 × 1 cm., flattened, narrowly oblong, obtuse to rounded at the apex, 2-seeded, almost smooth.
    Seeds
    Seeds winged, with veins marginal and submedian.
