    Habit
    Spiny perennial herb or subshrub 30–170 cm tall; stems buff- or yellowish-strigose with interspersed shorter spreading hairs when young.
    Leaves
    Leaves oblong-elliptic, 2–5 × 0.7–1.5 cm, base acute or subattenuate, margin revolute when young, apex ± acute, spine-tipped, upper surface with coarse spreading hairs, lower surface strigose on veins and with numerous spreading whitish hairs when young; lateral veins 4–6 pairs, ± prominent beneath; petiole 0–4 mm long.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence axillary, 1(3)-flowered, subsessile; bracteoles linear-lanceolate, 10–23 × 1–3 mm, often curved, conduplicate in cross-section, margin entire, apex spinose.
    Calyx
    Calyx at first (brown-)green with darker reticulate venation, turning pale-scarious; outer lobes subequal, broadly ovate(-elliptic), 14.5–26 × 10.5–17.5 mm, base truncate or cordate, margin spinulose-dentate, apex obtuse to attenuate in outline with apical spine, surface strigose, often with scattered minute stalked glands; lateral lobes lanceolate-attenuate, 7.5–13 mm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla 40–50 mm long, white, pale blue or pale mauve, glandular-pilose externally; tube (25)28–34 mm long, gradually funnel-shaped above attachment point of stamens; limb in 2+3 arrangement; abaxial and lateral lobes 12–15.5 × 11.5–15 mm; adaxial lobes 11.5–14.5 × 7–9.5 mm.
    Stamens
    Stamens attached 10–16 mm from base of corolla tube; filaments 19–22 mm long; anthers 4–5 mm long; lateral staminodes 2–2.8 mm long, pilose and with minute stalked glands, antherodes barely developed.
    Ovary
    Ovary glabrous; style with ring of declinate hairs at base or glabrous; stigma linear, 1–1.5 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule and seeds not seen.
    Distribution
    Also in S Tanzania.
    Ecology
    In Tanzania found in miombo woodland and fringes of riverine woodland, often on dry rocky slopes.; c.1000 m.
    Conservation
    Conservation notes: A highly localised species, with no further collections in the Flora area since the type gathering; assessed as Least Concern in F.T.E.A.
