    Habit
    Perennial herb or subshrub 60–120 cm tall, erect or straggling; stems glabrous, older stems with grey bark.
    Spines
    Axillary spines minute, often sparse, 4(6)-rayed, stalk to 0.7 mm long, longest ray 1–3 mm long.
    Leaves
    Leaves (linear-)lanceolate, narrowly oblong-elliptic or oblanceolate, 3.5–11.7 × 0.5–3.5 cm, base cuneate(-attenuate), apex acute or rarely obtuse, apiculate, surfaces strigulose when young, soon glabrescent except along margin and midrib beneath, sometimes sparse broad sessile glands towards base beneath; petiole 0–5 mm.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence a congested head 1.5–4 cm long on main and short lateral branches, each cymule 1–7-flowered; bracts green with whitish margins towards base, narrowly spathulate, 10–22 × 1.5–4 mm, apiculate, strigose mainly along midrib and margin, often with finer short hairs interspersed and short-stalked glands in distal half; bracteoles white with green midrib, linear-lanceolate, (6.5)8–13 × 1–2 mm, apex mucronate.
    Calyx
    Calyx lobes green at first with paler margins, later whitish-green throughout, subequal, outer lobes lanceolate, 8.5–14.5 × 2.3–3.5(4.3) mm, (sub)attenuate into apiculum, anterior lobe sometimes notched, with short eglandular and glandular hairs towards apex, elsewhere glabrous, venation inconspicuous or 2 (anterior) or 1 (posterior) veins prominent; lateral lobes somewhat narrower.
    Corolla
    Corolla 29–43.5 mm long, yellow, pubescent externally, limb with mixed eglandular and glandular hairs; tube 11–15 mm long; limb in 4+1 arrangement; abaxial lobe 8.5–14 × 3.5–6 mm, offset by 7–10.5 mm; lateral lobes 11.5–17 × 7–10 mm; adaxial lobes 11.5–19.5 × 5–8.5 mm.
    Stamens
    Stamens with filaments 24–30 mm long, glabrous or with short hairs towards base; anthers c.3 mm; lateral staminodes c.0.5 mm, pilose, antherodes c.1 mm.
    Ovary
    Ovary glabrous; stigma linear, 0.6–0.75 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 13.5–15.5 mm long, glabrous.
    Seeds
    Only immature seeds seen.
    Distribution
    Not known elsewhere.
    Ecology
    Dry rocky slopes in open mopane or Commiphora woodland or wooded grassland and riverbanks; 450–950 m.
    Conservation
    Conservation notes: Endemic to the Zambezi Valley. Local and uncommon, but not considered threatened; Least Concern.
