    Habit
    Perennial herb or subshrub 15–120 cm tall, erect or decumbent; stems minutely pubescent on two opposite sides, more widespread when young, soon glabrescent.
    Spines
    Axillary spines absent.
    Leaves
    Leaves ovate or elliptic, 6–11.5 × 3–5.8 cm, base attenuate, apex acute or obtuse, apiculate, glabrous on margin and veins, sparsely strigose beneath, sometimes shortly spreading-pubescent when young; petiole 5–30 mm.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence a ± cylindrical strobilate terminal spike 3–10(15) cm long, each cymule 1(2)-flowered, subsessile; bracts imbricate, (oblong-)elliptic to obovate or lower pairs ovate, 12.5–24.5 × 5–18 mm, apex obtuse or rounded, mucronulate, surface densely pubescent with mixed shorter eglandular and longer glandular hairs, margin often glandular-pilose; bracteoles (elliptic-)lanceolate, 8.5–20 × 1–3.5 mm.
    Calyx
    Anterior calyx lobe oblong-elliptic or -ovate, 12.5–20.5 × 4.5–8 mm, apex acute or subattenuate, often notched, indumentum as bracts, venation subparallel; posterior lobe more ovate, apex often attenuate; lateral lobes 10.5–15.5 mm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla 45–62 mm long, yellow, orange or apricot, pilose externally, some hairs glandular; tube 20–28 mm long; limb in 4+1 arrangement; abaxial lobe 17–23 × 10–13.5 mm, offset by 9–14 mm; lateral lobes 13.5–18 × 11.5–15 mm; adaxial lobes as laterals but 8.5–12.5 mm wide.
    Stamens
    Stamens with filaments 22–26.5 mm long, pubescent in proximal two-thirds; anthers 3.2–4.3 mm; lateral staminodes 1.5–3.5 mm, pilose, antherodes 1–1.3 mm.
    Ovary
    Ovary glabrous; stigma 0.7–1 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 16–20 mm long, glabrous.
    Seeds
    Seeds 9–11 × 6.5–8.5 mm.
    Distribution
    Also in E Tanzania.
    Ecology
    Coastal bushland and grassland, foreshores, lowland riverine forest and thicket in Tanzania; 0–20 m.
    Conservation
    Conservation notes: Known from only a single specimen in the Flora area; coastal bushlands on the NE Mozambique islands are now largely degraded. Assessed as Near Threatened in F.T.E.A. but should be considered nationally threatened.
