    Habit
    Tree to 24-30 m. tall with lightly branched crown; bole 13-24 m. to first branch, not buttressed.
    Bark
    Outer bark pale grey or pale brown, with numerous small nodules but nearly smooth, flaking in large plates leaving liver-coloured patches; slash with outer bark papery, very thin, inner red, 1.3 cm. thick, not fibrous, with watery exudate.
    Wood
    Sapwood cream 5 cm. wide; heartwood greenish brown or chestnut; young branches with fine adpressed ferruginous pubescence, densely velvety on leaf buds etc., but soon glabrous.
    Leaves
    Leaf-blades oblong-ovate to elliptic or oblong, (10-)11.5-18(-22) cm. long, 4-9(-11) cm. wide, narrowly acuminate at the apex, broadly cuneate to rounded at the base, glabrous, said to be waxy above; petiole 1.7-2 cm. long, with some pubescence when young but soon glabrous.
    Flowers
    Flowers dark red ( fide Greenway) in lax panicles 4-6 cm. long; peduncles ± 5 cm. long; secondary axes up to 3 cm. long; pedicels 2 mm. long.
    Perianth
    Perianth turbinate-campanulate, up to 3 mm. tall and wide; tube 1.3-1.5 mm. long; lobes ovate, 1.3-1.5 mm. long.
    Stamens
    Introrse anthers of both outer whorls of stamens broadly ovate, with broad short filaments; those of third whorl dehiscing laterally, subrectangular with depressed subglobose or ellipsoid glands at base of the filaments; 3 staminodes of the inner whorl cordate, acuminate, scarcely stalked.
    Pistil
    Ovary and style flask-shaped, 2 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Fruits ellipsoid, olive-like, 3.5-5 cm. long, 1.5-2.5 cm. wide (2.5 x 1.3 cm. fide Bryce).
    Seeds
    Cotyledons pale violet-brown, semicircular, very thick and solid.
