    Habit
    Erect to procumbent annual herb; stems up to 35 cm long, quadrangular, sparsely to densely hispid-pubescent (rarely sericeous).
    Leaves
    Leaves: lamina linear to narrowly ovate or narrowly elliptic, largest 4.5–8 × 0.4–1.5 cm, margin entire, subglabrous to sparsely hispid-pubescent, densest on veins.
    Inflorescences
    Spikes solitary, dispersed whole when mature; bracts greenish with purple-brown veins and bristles, ovate to elliptic, puberulous to pubescent and ciliate, with a reflexed tip about half the length of the bract, this tip ending in a bristle and on each side with 4–8 scabrid bristles 1–4 mm long; lower pair (excl. tip) 3–5 mm long, second pair 4–6 mm long, third pair 6–9 mm long, inner pair 7–9 mm long; bracteoles absent.
    Calyx
    Sepals coloured as bracts, puberulous to pubescent and ciliate; dorsal elliptic, 11–14 mm long, narrowing gradually to the acute apex; ventral ovate-elliptic, 10–13 mm long; lateral 9–12 mm long.
    Corolla
    Corolla white to pale blue or pale mauve; tube 5–6 mm long; limb 6–8 mm long, callus without or with inconspicuous flanges.
    Filaments
    Filaments 1–2 mm long, ± included in tube, glabrous; appendage broadly rounded, almost as long as the 1.5–2 mm long anther.
    Fruits
    Capsule ± 7 mm long.
    Seeds
    Seed ± 5 × 4 mm.
    Distribution
    Range: Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe Range: Tanzania. Flora districts: T1 T4 T5 T6 T7 T8 Range: Cameroon, Chad, Sudan, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe
    Ecology
    Seasonally waterlogged grassland and Acacia bushland on alkaline hardpans, Acacia drepanolobium bushland and grassland on greyish to black clay, old rice fields, roadsides; 100–1400 m
    Note
    This and the following species do not seem to be close to any other species. They are immediately recognisable by the sharply reflexed bract-tip.
