    Habit
    Erect or rarely decumbent annual or short-lived perennial, up to 7 dm. tall, well branched, often mostly from near the base.
    Stem
    Stem appressed puberulous.

    Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets linear, or less commonly lanceolate or narrowly oblong, up to 25–75 mm. long, 3–10 mm. wide, glabrous above, appressed pubescent beneath; petiole 10–20 mm. long.
    Stipules
    Stipules absent.
    Inflorescences
    Racemes terminal and leaf-opposed, long-pedunculate, up to 4–15 cm. long, with few to many rather closely arranged flowers towards the top; bracts triangular or subulate-caudate, up to 1 mm. long; bracteoles inserted at the base of the calyx, filiform, up to 0·5 mm. long, or absent.
    Calyx
    Calyx becoming basally truncate and deflexed against the pedicel, 3–4 mm. long, appressed puberulous; lobes triangular-acuminate, ± as long as the tube.
    Corolla
    Standard suborbicular, yellow, veined reddish or purple, glabrous outside; wings shorter than the keel; keel rounded about the middle, with a slightly incurved attenuate-acute untwisted beak, 5–7 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Pod sessile, cylindrical, up to 22 mm. long, 5–6 mm. across, appressed puberulous, ± 20–24-seeded.
    Seeds
    Seeds oblique-cordiform, 2–2·5 mm. long, smooth or minutely punctate, pale yellow to grey.
    Habitat
    Grassland, sometimes with scattered trees, usually on shallow rocky soils, also becoming a weed of cultivated ground; 1170–1920 m.
