    Habit
    Shrub or bushy subshrub, 1–2 m tall, with hairy ± glabrescent branches.
    Leaves
    Leaves often with short axillary shoots bearing clusters of smaller leaves, estipulate, 3-foliolate; leaflets 7–20(30) × 4–10 mm, usually small and obovate but in var. galpinii varying from oblong-oblanceolate to elliptic-obovate, puberulous beneath; petioles mostly 0.5–1.7 times as long as leaflets.
    Inflorescences
    Racemes mostly few-flowered; bracts 1–3 mm long, subulate or linear; bracteoles minute.
    Calyx
    Calyx 7–10 mm long, puberulous, rarely subglabrous; lobes triangular, sometimes acuminate, ± as long as tube.
    Corolla
    Standard ovate, yellow, usually marked orange or brown, glabrous or medially puberulous outside; wings 0.75–0.9 times as long as keel; keel 1.6–2 cm long, rounded about the middle with a rather short bluntly pointed beak.
    Fruits
    Pod including 6–8 mm long stipe 2–3(3.5) cm long, oblong-clavate, pubescent.
    Seeds
    Seeds c. 3.5 mm long, subcircular-cordiform, granulate or slightly rugulose, ochre or pale brown.
