    Habit
    Shrub 1–3(5) m tall, with tomentose branches in the Flora Zambesiaca area.
    Leaves
    Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets mostly 2.5–5(8) × 1–2(2.7) cm, oblanceolate-elliptic, elliptic or obovate-oblong, subglabrous to pilose above, rather densely silky pilose beneath; petioles mostly 0.8–3 cm long; stipules up to 1 mm long, subulate, or lacking.
    Inflorescences
    Racemes with many fairly closely arranged flowers; bracts 1–3 mm long, shortly caudate-lanceolate; bracteoles on the upper part of the pedicel, small.
    Calyx
    Calyx 3.5–5 mm long, densely appressed pilose; lobes narrowly triangular, ± as long as the tube.
    Corolla
    Standard broadly elliptic to subcircular, yellow, glabrous; wings ± as long as the keel or a little shorter; keel rounded about the middle (except in Asia), with an incurved narrow beak, 9–11 mm long in Africa, smaller elsewhere.
    Fruits
    Pod with a 2–3 mm long stipe 8–11 × 5–7 mm in Africa (sometimes smaller elsewhere), subglobose-ellipsoid, tomentose in Africa, 2-seeded; style very persistent.

    Seeds 3–4 mm long, oblique-cordiform, smooth, light brown.

    Habit
    Much branched shrub or bushy woody herb, up to 2–5 m. tall in Africa, smaller elsewhere.

    Branches tomentose, with tawny mostly spreading hairs or elsewhere subappressed pubescent.
    Leaves
    Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets oblanceolate-elliptic or narrowly elliptic to obovate-oblong, up to 30–75 mm. long, 15–27 mm. wide, subglabrous to pilose above, though often ultimately glabrescent, rather densely appressed pilose beneath; petioles up to 8–28 mm. long.
    Stipules
    Stipules subulate, up to 1 mm. long, or obscure.
    Inflorescences
    Racemes up to 5–10 cm. long, with a number of flowers rather closely arranged at least towards the top; bracts shortly caudate-lanceolate, 1–3 mm. long; bracteoles inserted on the upper part of the pedicel, linear or linear-lanceolate, up to 1·5 mm. long.
    Calyx
    Calyx abruptly contracted at the base, (3–)3·5–5 mm. long, densely appressed pubescent; lobes narrowly triangular, usually a little shorter than the tube.
    Corolla
    Standard broadly elliptic or suborbicular, yellow, glabrous outside; wings ± as long as or a little shorter than the keel; keel rounded about the middle (except in Asia), with an incurved untwisted beak, 9–11 mm. long in Africa, smaller elsewhere.
    Fruits
    Pod subglobose-ellipsoid, abruptly contracted into the 2–3 mm. long stipe, 10–11 mm. long and 5–7 mm. across (smaller elsewhere), brownish tomentose or, elsewhere, appressed pubescent, 2-seeded; style very persistent.
    Seeds
    Seeds oblique-cordiform, ± 4 mm. long, smooth, light brown.
    Habitat
    Forest margins, rocky peaks and outcrops, upland grassland; 450–1100 m.
