    Habit
    Plant slender, 4–50 cm high, with a thin long sheathing rhizome to 10 cm long × 0.4–2 cm thick.
    Roots
    Roots fusiform, fleshy.
    Leaves
    Leaves linear, obtuse, 9–20 × 0.3–2 cm.
    Peduncles
    Peduncle 15–30 cm long.
    Involucre
    Involucral bracts broadly lanceolate, 1–2 cm long and up to 7 mm wide.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence 3–8-flowered.
    Pedicel
    Pedicels up to 3.5 cm in fruit; perianth tube 7 mm long; segments lorate-lanceolate, green, in 2 whorls 1 mm apart, 2–4 × 1.5–2 mm, acute to obtuse; corona slightly broader than perianth tube, cylindrical, obscurely 3- or 6-crenate, orange-brown, 2–3 mm long.
    Anthers
    Anthers 1.3–1.5 mm long, upper whorl inserted on corona 1 mm below mouth, lower whorl inserted at junction of corona and corolla tubes or on corolla tube.
    Ovary
    Ovary ovoid, 2–3.5 mm long; style 0.5–1 mm long.
    Fruits
    Capsule obcordate, up to 8 mm long; seeds ovoid, slightly angled, 1.5–2 mm long.
    Distribution
    Also found in South Africa (former Transvaal, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape), Swaziland and Lesotho.
    Ecology
    A range of habitats from woodland to upland grassland; 1000–2000 m.
    Conservation
    Conservation notes: Moderately widespread: probably not threatened.
