    Habit
    Erect herb 0.5–3 m tall.

    Stems densely and shortly stellate-hispid, with a longitudinal line of pubescence
    Leaves
    Leaves ovate to orbicular in outline, 3–4.5 × 3.5–5.7 cm, unlobed or shallowly 3-lobed, apex obtuse or rounded, base rounded or truncate, rarely cuneate, margin dentate or serrate, densely stellate-hispid above and below, the setae 6–10-armed, simple-pubescent above (rarely glabrous), veins inconspicuous above, prominently raised beneath; petiole 2–25 mm long, densely rufous-stellatehispid; stipules linear to linear-lanceolate, 3–6 × 0.3–0.4 mm, sparsely hispid

    Flowers solitary in the upper leaf axils, or in terminal racemes; pedicel 1.6–6 cm long, articulated in the upper half, rusty brown above articulation, densely stellate-hispid; epicalyx of 8–12 linear bracts 4–7 × 0.5–1 mm, hispid, each with a prominent median vein; calyx lobes triangular to lanceolate to ovate-acuminate, 7–8 × 1.2–2 mm, fused in the lower third, 3-veined, densely stellate-hispid

    Corolla bright red, 10–15 mm long, stellate-hispid on the outside, glabrous on the inside.

    Habit
    Shrublet or perennial herb up to 1 m. tall; stems somewhat scabrous, stellate-setulose, hairs mainly appressed but often somewhat patent.
    Leaves
    Leaf-lamina 2–4 × 2–3 cm., ovate to elliptic with a tendency to become 3-lobed, densely stellate-pubescent or stellate-pilose, apex rounded or obtuse, margin serrate, base rounded to obtuse 5-nerved; petiole 1–2 cm. long; stipules 5–9 mm. long, acicular.
    Flowers
    Flowers 1·5–2 cm. in diam., red or pink, solitary, axillary; peduncle up to 3 cm. long (often much shorter).
    Epicalyx
    Epicalyx of 8–13 bracts; bracts 3·5–8 mm. long, linear-subulate.
    Calyx
    Calyx up to 9 mm. long, hispid; lobes 5–8 × 1·5–3 mm., triangular to narrowly triangular-lanceolate.
    Corolla
    Petals 13–15 mm. long, narrowly obovate, stellate-setose outside, glabrous inside.
    Stamens
    Staminal tube 7–10 mm. long; free parts of filaments 0·5–1 mm. long.
    Style
    Style-branches 4–5 mm. long.
    Fruits
    Capsule 8–12 × 8–12 mm., ellipsoid to subglobose, pubescent.

    Seeds with white silky floss.
