    Habit
    Straggling, decumbent, subscandent or ± erect herb or undershrub 0.3–2(–4) m long from a woody rootstock.

    Stems ± glabrous to sparsely pubescent
    Leaves
    Leaves broadly ovate in outline, 2.5–10.5 × 2.5–8.5 cm, usually deeply 3-lobed (shallowly in some central Kenyan specimens), sparsely pubescent; lobes elliptic to ovate, 1–6 × 0.7–3.5 cm, acuminate, toothed or ± double-toothed, the outer lobes often with lobe on outer side; petiole 1.2–6.5(–12) cm long; stipules narrowly oblong, 5 × 1.2 mm

    Flowers solitary, paired or in 2–3-flowered cymes; peduncle (1–)2.5–6(–7.5) cm long; pedicel 0.5–2 cm long; calyx tube ± 2 mm long, ± ribbed; lobes triangular-ovate, 5–9 × 2.5–4 mm, narrowly acuminate or cuspidate
    Corolla
    Corolla usually white, sometimes purplish outside or pinkish in bud; petals elliptic, 6–10 × 3.5–4.5 mm, obtuse.

    Staminal column 2–3 mm long, glandular hairy at base
    Fruits
    Mericarps 8–13, semi-ellipsoid, ± 3.5 × 2 × 1.2 mm, compressed, glabrous, smooth or slightly warted; beak 1 mm long, not divided.

    Upland forest of bamboo, Juniperus, Podocarpus etc., riverine and ground-water forest, also drier Olea forest, hillside thickets, forest clearings with banana plantations; 1350–2500 m
