    Habit
    Tree up to 35 m. or more tall; bole straight; buttresses absent or very short; bark grey-brown or black, rough, sloughing in small scales.
    Leaves
    Leaves up to 26 cm. long; leaflets 9–15, lanceolate, up to 14 × 4 cm., tapering from near the base to the narrowly acuminate apex which is often curved to one side, lower surface glabrous or almost so.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence a little-branched axillary panicle up to 12 cm. long.
    Calyx
    Calyx 0.3–0.35 cm. long, divided almost to the base; lobes ovate to subcircular, pubescent.
    Corolla
    Petals 1–1.2 cm. long, pubescent.
    Stamens
    Staminal tube 0.5–0.7 cm. long.
    Fruits
    Capsule subglobose, ± 3 cm. in diameter, shallowly 2–3-lobed, tomentellous; valves with indistinct longitudinal wrinkles; stipe up to 1.5 cm. long.
    Seeds
    Seeds black, almost completely concealed by the orange-red aril.
    Habitat
    Rain-forest; 1000–1200 m.
    Distribution
    U2 U4 towards the northern, southern and eastern limits of Guineo-Congolian rain-forest from Sierra Leone to Uganda and (south of the equator) westwards to near the mouth of the Zaire R.

    Habit
    A forest tree, up to 100 ft. high and nearly 10 ft. girth

    Straight cylindrical stem, out buttresses
    Bark
    Bark dark grey, with rough more or less rectangular scales
    Slash
    Slash pink outside, yellowish within, exuding a little coffee-coloured latex, with a disagreeable smell
