    Habit
    Bulbs up to 15 cm. in diameter, often with a considerable neck, often propagating vegetatively to form clusters.
    Leaves
    Leaves erect, lanceolate, up to 60 (–75) cm. long, 2.5–5(–9) cm. broad, keeled with a distinct midrib, glabrous to slightly scabrous on the margin, normally evergreen with intact acute apices, in most cases white woolly fibres (vascular sclerenchyma) appearing when a leaf is torn.
    Scape
    Scape 25–65 cm. long, contemporary with the leaves.
    Bracts
    Spathe-valves greenish, tinged with red, persistent and erect.
    Flowers
    Flowers (1–)3–6 (–9), sessile.
    Perianth
    Perianth-tube greenish to reddish, curved, 8–13 cm. long; segments green in bud, but during anthesis pure white with a broad sharply bordered mauve to purple dorsal streak, broadly lanceolate, acuminate, 8–11 cm. long, 2–3 cm. broad, outer and inner ones subequal in width, all connivent to a zygomorphic bell.
    Stamens
    Filaments white or tinged with red, declinate; anthers grey to black (or brown), curved, ± 0.7 cm. long.
    Style
    Style white or greenish white, often tinged red distally.
    Fruits
    Fruits greenish tinged with red, subglobose, without or with a short beak up to 0.5 cm. long.
    Seeds
    Seeds light green, closely stacked and irregularly compressed, 15–45 per fruit.
    Habitat
    Grassland, forest or riverine vegetation, often on abandoned cultivations and in disturbed places; 1000–1900 m.
