Habit
An erect herb, 6 to 12 dm. tall, glabrous or pilose-pubescent in lower part, more or less densely pubescent in the upper part and on the inflorescence branches.
Leaves
Leaves variable, blades deeply lobed or segmented, sometimes nearly to base, with the segments varying in width.
Inflorescences
Final inflorescence branches 6–16 cm. long.
Flowers
Flowers 4.5 cm. in diameter, sweetly scented.
Calyx
Sepals blue or mauve; spur 3.5–4 cm. long, more or less simply curved.
Filaments
Filaments definitely ciliated.
Carpels
Carpels 3, covered with a very dense silky indumentum.
Habitat
Upland grassland, 1200–1500 m.
