- Habit
- Perennial herb up to 4 m. tall, sometimes semi-scandent.
- Leaves
- Leaves up to 40 cm. or more in length (including petiole), tripinnate to quadripinnate; leaflets elliptic to broadly ovate or oblate, often somewhat trilobed or with coarse rounded teeth, apex usually apiculate, base rounded to cordate.
- Inflorescences
- Inflorescence lax, many-flowered, some flowers male only.
- Calyx
- Sepals 1.5–3 mm. long, green to purplish.
- Stamens
- Stamens 3–13; anther-thecae 0.8–1.7 mm. long, prolongation of connective 0.05–0.5 mm. long.
- Carpels
- Carpels 1–4.
- Stigma
- Stigma linear, 2–7 mm. long at anthesis, covered with stigmatic papillae.

- Habit
- Perennial herb with erect stems 1–4 m. tall, more or less branched.
- Leaves
- Leaves rather large, up to 4 dm. or more in length (including petiole), tripinnate to quadripinnate; leaflets elliptic-oblong to broadly ovate and oblate, sometimes rather obscurely trilobed, with coarse teeth, apices rounded, usually apiculate, bases rounded to cordate.

- Inflorescence lax, many flowered.
- Calyx
- Sepals 1.5–4.0 mm. long, green to purplish.
- Stamens
- Stamens 3–13; anther thecae 0.8–1.7 mm. long, prolongation of connective 0.05–0.4 mm. long.

- Carpels 1–2; stigma 2–7 mm. long at anthesis.
- Fruits
- Achenes on slender elongated pedicels which are 6–11 cm. long, asymmetric, tapering into a persistent style, at the base tapering to a stipe or nearly sessile.

- Glades and undergrowth of upland rain forest, upland evergreen bushland on stream sides and upland grassland, 1620–3150 m.
