    Habit
    A rather stout species with a stocky central tuft of leaves, and long creeping stolons.
    Stem
    Stems variably shaggy with spreading or ± deflexed, pale brown hairs.
    Stipules
    Stipules bilobed, membranous, brownish or ± so in the lower part, foliaceous, green and leaf-like in the upper part, terminally dentate, hairy as the leaves.
    Leaves
    Leaves round in outline, 7–9-lobed, 2–7.5 cm. diameter, the basal sinus usually narrow, often closed or nearly so, covered on both faces (or only very sparsely so above) with white or brownish hairs, sometimes very soft and silky-white; lobes usually very shallow, up to 2 (–7) mm. deep (the leaves often appearing to be undivided), terminally very broadly rounded to truncate and dentate with 9–13 subacute teeth; petioles up to 8 cm. long, hairy as the stems.
    Inflorescences
    Inflorescence often much exceeding the leaves and up to 22 cm. long; pedicels shaggy, 3–12 mm. long; panicles usually open but sometimes the inflorescence dense.
    Calyx
    Calyx-lobes ovate-triangular, 1.75–2 mm. long; epicalyx-lobes ovate-lanceolate, shorter and narrower than the calyx-lobes (more rarely of subequal length); calyx and epicalyx shaggy on the outside; disc (when dry) tending to become black.
    Fruits
    Achenes 1–2.
