    Habit
    Scandent shrub, climber or scrambling herb up to 4.5 m. long but also reported to be a shrub (fide Bequaert and Schlieben); stems covered with buff tomentum when very young but soon glabrous.
    Leaves
    Leaf-blades elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate, (3–)4–11.5(–20.5) cm. long, 1–4.7(–8.5) cm. wide, mostly distincdy and narrowly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, covered with cottony tomentum above when very young but almost immediately glabrous, densely finely velvety persistendy buff tomentose beneath; petiole 0.3–1.2 cm. long, tomentose and with longer hairs on margins of upper channel spreading on to the margins of the extreme base of the leaf; stipules elliptic-oblong, 8–9 mm. long, 4–4.5 mm. wide, ± acute, glabrescent.
    Flowers
    Flowers in sessile bracteate axillary inflorescences; outer sheathing bracts ovate, 1.2 cm. long, 9 mm. wide, ± glabrous on inner side, with long hairs on margins and outer side which is also ± tomentose particularly towards the apex, densely bristly pilose inside; bracteoles falcate, 6 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, keeled outside, ciliate at the margins, pilose inside.
    Calyx
    Calyx-tube obconic, 1.5 mm. long, pilose; tubular part of limb ± glabrous, 1.5 mm. long; lobes ovate, 2 mm. long, hairy at the apex outside, bristly pilose inside.
    Corolla
    Corolla white turning brown with age, ± fleshy; tube 0.5–1 cm. long, the lobes lanceolate, 2–5 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, both hairy outside.
    Pistil
    Style in long-styled flowers 1 cm. long; stigmatic lobes 2.2 mm. long.
